Very good food but fair ambiance and noise. We were very happy with our meals, this is definately a few steps above a national chain restaurant! Unfortunately, it could be difficult to carry on a conversation at a booth as the booth tables are larger than usual. My husband and I went with our age 50-some parents to celebrate birthdays and although they do not have hearing issues, they were often unable to decipher what we had said due to the noise of the room. Server was extremely slow.
This was overall a disappointing experience. They did have our table for 7 ready right on time. The appetizers were tasty. However, 4 of the 7 of us were disappointed in our meals. One of us sent our overcooked steak back and it was taken care of right away, but the rest of us just suffered with our disappointment, because it was so bad it was kind of ridiculous. We often visit Charbono's and order the same menu items. Our BBQ Chicken Pizza was extremely burnt on the bottom which made the flavor less than optimal. Both men in the dinner parties ordered the burger, with different preferences on cooking temp and different toppings. The cooks switched the burgers and toppings so when my husband bit into a rare burger, he was not too happy. The men had to switch all the toppings and swap burgers. I knew Charbonos was lower than the company's Stone Creek and Boulder Creek brands. However, I didn't expect some things to go as they did. We made a reservation for 1pm via Open Table for Mother's Day. We got there 10 minutes early and all was good with the reservation. However, we weren't seated until around 1:10pm or 1:15pm. Why? Since it was busy the front desk just started asking people how many were in there party and seating them regardless of reservation. We enjoy eating here. One of the best restaurants on the West Side as far as we're concerned.
There are too many restaurants in the greater Indianapolis area with better food, more seasoned staff and better prices for a strip mall eatery. They must be banking on the alluring name, Charbonos, as Ponderosa Plus would do nicely. The food was not bad, especially if you didn't happen to know that it was priced the same as much more superior selections at much more appealing locations.
