Any account of the Harbor View's history must begin with Edgartown, its legendary birthplace. Settled in 1671, this early colony steadily came to be known as a prime port for whaling. And as that enterprise grew, so too did Edgartown, in both prominence and influence. In fact, by mid-1800, this bustling municipality had become the Vineyard's wealthiest. But as the whaling industry began to ebb, Edgartown officials turned their attention to a new source of prosperity: tourism. With ambitions of building the finest resort o... read more

I was so looking forward to staying at the historic Harbor View Hotel to celebrate my retierment. Having come to Martha's Vineyard for years and always admirinng the external ambience of the hotel, my wife and I decided to extend our stay (we had already been on the island for a week with our family at a rented home) and spend 3 nights at the Harbor View Hotel. Our disapointment began prior to check-in when we received an email informing us 2 days prior to arrival that the hotel decided to rennovate the property and would no... read more

this hotel needs work.....but it will be happing in a few weeks
This property is uniquely situated in Edgartown overlooking the water. The lobby is very inviting and so are the restaurants. The grand porch with rocking chairs are a must do. I was initially placed in the Governors Building. The entire building was in disrepair and the common areas smelled. I asked for a pool view room with a King bed and received the pool view, did not receive a king bed. I told the manager on the first night and he noted that the room was supposed to have a king bed. They hire poorly trained young staff from Europe who are at times uncouth. One of the waitress staff were extremely rude.
Great location. But the buildings were well on their way to run down. Had an extremely disappointing dinner at the restaurant. Our waitress brought new meaning to the word disinterested. My son and I ordered the linguine with clam sauce for $33 a plate...four dried up clams and a little pile of noodles. Bread was elusive... no salads.. pretty bad.
Sadly disappointed! When we got beyond the hotel lobby.... our room was shabby in need of and update and good cleaning. And smelled of mold. We had a balcony but you wouldn’t want to step out on it, peeling and splintered plywood. Sad condition. Very unwelcoming. This was a splurge getaway for us celebrating a milestone birthday. Room cost was $500/ night for shabby conditions. Would not recommend. Porch was wonderful so that is where we hung out....
The front desk was very unorganized and computer problems did not help. Staff members may have been trainees which would account for needless waiting and reservation confusion.
