I bought this unit on recommendations of my pool supply company. I owned a Dolphin 20 which worked well but needed a lid latch. He stated he never had a complaint on this Polaris Epic 8640. I bought it and dropped it in the inground pool. I was not impressed with the unit. If you never owned a better one, you wouldn't know the difference. 1st, it doesn't stay on the water line long enough to clean. Maybe 7.. 10 seconds. I heard/read good things about the 8640 but it does no even come close to the job my Polaris 9350 Sport did for 6.5 years. I'm disappointed that I didn't just buy the new motor assembly. The catch bin capacity is insufficient and needs to be checked after an hour and brushed after use. My 9350 would come clean just with hose pressure. Looks/feels like different mesh material.

The unit does not remove all types of pool debris. It is common to use Flocculant and Phosphate Remover chemicals in pool water. However, the Polaris EPIC 8640 robotic cleaner does not remove this debris. The Polaris will sweep up this debris, but it blows this debris out of the top of the machine. I expressed my concern to my local pool supply store, and I was told that this unit is intended to "keep a clean pool clean". The device is easy to operate. It cleans fine debris but has trouble with larger debris (Leaves).

I have a kidney shaped pool with half the pool at 3 ft deep and then slopes down to 8 ft deep at the other end. The cleaner spends most of the time at the shallow end. It does a poor job at the deep end and there is one area that does not get cleaned which I have to clean with my normal vacuum. Also, it does not pick up sand. Don't like the cleaner and would not have bought it if I had known this.
