I have been a member of the Sparetime Family for almost four decades. I begin at Midtown Atletic...then when closed...moved over to Natomas Racquet Club (now gone as well). I later took my membership to Rio del Oro when I moved to Sierra Oaks. For years now I have hoped to see an improvedment in the overall facility; new equipment, showers and locker area as well the outside lounging areas. Besides paint and some new carpet, the club continues to be old and outdated with equipment that is tired as well. With hopes that t... read more

Business response:

Hi Randall, thank you for being a long-time supporter of Spare Time Sports Clubs! We agree that we have been due for upgrades around the club, which are happening in phases! We just replaced all of the cardio equipment with brand new Life Fitness equipment. Next, we will be updating the Functional Fitness room, then the locker rooms will be fully renovated. We appreciate you voicing your concerns and we hear you. We apologize that these projects have taken longer than anticipated. We thank you greatly for your support during... read more

I've been a member for about a year. The 50 years this club has been open show in the layout of the workout room...tight, poorly conceived. My main peeve is that in the summer this is more akin to a day care center for kids and teens than a swim facility for adults. Mornings are exceptionally difficult to get a lane and weekends are booked with swim meets more often than not. People are nice and there is a community of regulars, but they can't use the facilities at normal times during the summer. I guess it's great that ki... read more

I have been a loyal member at Rio for the better part of 20 years. I even coached tennis there in the early 2000s. Over the past few months the hot tub has been getting cooler and cooler-- it's not even hot enough to maintain the therapeutic benefits. Standards in CA are up to 104 degrees. They've dropped the therm to 101 degrees, which in reality, at night the hot tub is only about 98 degrees. It's been miserable lukewarm bathwater for weeks now. The hot tub is just about the only thing I use at Rio, so this is all very dis... read more

Business response:

Hi Kristy, The Sacramento Country Environmental Management Department changed the temperature regulations for 2023. The rule is now that the max temperature a spa can be set at is 104 degrees. However, the standard has also changed to forcing closures of spas if they reach 105 degrees, this truly leaves no space for a temperature rise in the spa although the temperature outside rises during the day. The county has recommended setting the temperatures between 100-102 regularly now, which is the policy we are following. We val... read more

The club is well designed including a good work out room and multiple pools. However, over the past several years it has gradually transformed into a camp for kids with virtually no enforcement of the rules. They used to post the rules and have staff (Bud and Judy) enforce them, particularly for kids. A few years ago they took down the signs regarding the rules for the hot tub and swimming pools and only recently put the hot tub sign out again after multiple complaints. They say that the parents are supposed to supervise ... read more

First of all, Rio del Oro has great swimming facilities including an 8-lane, 6-lane, and 2-lane pool. However, if you want to use any of those facilities before or after work at a reasonable time, this club is NOT for you. They consistently have both the 6-lane and 8-lane pools blocked off from 5:30 AM - 8 AM and again from 3:30 - 7:30 PM for swim teams & masters swimming. So you are essentially paying ~ $130 to only be able to use the pool at off-hours. I previously spoke with management about this, and his response was t... read more

This place is so shady. After telling me they could suspend my membership during covid, they continued to charge me. I spoke to 3 different people, all of them apologized and committed to making an adjustment. I didn't even ask for a refund, I told them they could give me credit toward future memberships when I could start using them gym again. They said they would stop charging me and issue the credit. They still have not, and they still keep charging me. I'm going to dispute the charges with my credit company. I'm also c... read more

Today, I walked by the jacuzzi and there were 15, yes 15 kids in there with two adults. And no rules about this other than "kids must be accompanied by adult". I'm concerned with the new surge in the Delta variant of Covid 19 that this is quite disrespectful, if not outright dangerous. I wish I knew that the Rio Del Oro sports club is more like a kids camp than a sports club. I get that kids need to play but there should be clear hours of adults only time. This was like being at a damn summer camp. Then one of the members ... read more

I've been a member here for years and appreciate how hard the gym has worked to accommodate the Covid restrictions but it is extremely clear they prioritize the swim team and masters swim over individual swimmers. This has been very disappointing. The administration does not seem to care. Do not sign-up here if you want to use the pool on your own. You are not a priority.
