All I can say is I'm not too keen on this place. Don't get me wrong, I think the vets are good and the staff is nice, but I really can only recommend coming here in an emergency. They are sooooo expensive that I have to rent out a room to a student for the next year in order to pay my 5 year old cat's most recent bill, and he didn't even have an operation. He stayed over 2 nights in the hospital, had a catheder, some tests done (blood work and an abdominal xray), left the place with an eye infection he didn't have when we... read more
Regarding Dr. Steve's initial claims that I wasn't a real client: Riverside's response to my review, 6 months after it was originally posted, only confirms the fact that they deserve their rating. I tend to suspect there is dishonesty associated with first claiming I was never a client, especially since I did complain to management on 10/8/11. But I do spell my first name differently by one letter than it is on my Yelp account. So I gave him the benefit of the doubt and confirmed my identity. I responded to Dr. Steve mome... read more

This is a response to Meyghans latest post. We were able to locate her in our database. We couldn't because her YELP "name" is different that what she used with us. After our back and forth messages it came down to this: She spent quite a bit of time on Yelp writing a very derogatory review of us based on: Hearsay (she admits it's hearsay) from her friend concerning what happened with his puppy with Parvo. Her mistaken belief that the cost of the spay was included in the adoption fee (as per the contract she signed... read more
I usually don't like to leave bad reviews but since this has to do with our pets who are like our children here I am. They might be kind and gentle but none of the Dr's here have been able to ever diagnose any illness my cats have had correctly. The first experience was with a cat we had just rescued who was making himself bleed by all the scratching. Dr K insisted it was allergies. We asked him to check if it was ring worm and he mocked us for doing our own research, finally by the 3rd vet visit ($$$!!!) we begged him to th... read more
I used to be a customer here because it was close and my first visit here was fantastic, but boy has my opinion of this place changed. I have had two emergencies with my dog since about a year ago. I called both times begging to be seen or just speak to a doctor on the phone for some advice on what to do before I could get him to the hospital. In the first emergency they suggested I go to the location in the 70's because the doctor couldn't see more than one patient in an hour THEN that place wouldn't take me. In the second,... read more
Business response:
Sometimes animal hospitals can be like emergency rooms, with everyone incredibly busy doing important things. When days are like that, it's hard for a doctor to get to phone. Even if we have two or three doctors working at once, sometimes we can be overwhelmed (think ER), and if that's the case we have no option but to send you to our sister hospital on W 79th Street or an emergency clinic. It's very possible both hospitals were overwhelmed that day (it happens). Our resources are finite in terms of doctors, technicians, nur... read more
Get a WRITTEN estimate before consenting to anything, and make sure you look it over carefully. If you make any change be sure the new estimate reflects the change. Every time we've come here our bill has ended up hundreds of dollars more than we were quoted because we took people at their word. I guess we were the suckers for trusting other humans. Time to find a new vet for this guy.
I do not like this animal hospital. They had been giving my puppy vaccinations and she had a reaction to one. I called the office and they said to come back to examine her. I told them that I would make it right when the office was closing. I was then told that they would not wait an extra 5 minutes past closing time. Also, if I arrived at closing no one would be there. This is an animal hospital right? How could no one be there to examine her? Never going back. Went to a new vet near Columbus Circle and love her. ... read more
Business response:
Meghan, We are so sorry your pup had a vaccine reaction. At the time, we were closing early because it was Christmas Eve. Our veterinarian that was working that day deemed it safer to refer you to an emergency hospital that would be properly staffed and would be able to observe her if need be. We are sorry for the inconvenience but felt it was safer for your puppy, as some reactions, though not frequent, can evolve and become dangerous. I'm sorry we did not get time to discuss it when you returned for the kennel cough va... read more
First, the good things: I have found the staff to be unfailingly friendly and helpful. They always made time to fit in our dog when he needed to be seen right away. You can tell they are real animal lovers. The bad: In my opinion, they perform a lot of unnecessary tests/interventions. I'm not sure whether it's driven by a desire for $, is just a difference in approach to the minimalist one that makes sense to me, or is maybe a combination of both. Whichever, I found myself feeling ripped-off and wondering if I had exposed m... read more

Thank you for the compliments, Kristin We certainly try hard to be friendly and helpful. It's a lot easier when we have friendly and helpful people working at our hospital! In regards to the second part of you review, we DO understand what you're talking about. We wish we had a magic wand or a universal translator so we could make diagnoses without having to do tests. But although we come close, we don't really speak cat or dog. And even if we did, we're not sure what a sick pet would tell us except to say "I don't feel goo... read more
I want to make this short and to the point! We just had to put our cat down in December. It was the most hardest thing I have ever had to go through. I miss him! I had Marley for 16 years. I got him when I was 15 and he has been by my side the whole time. My experience at this hospital was terrible. I know they did the best they could but here is what really truly bothered me: 1. Our Dr. was like a robot. No emotion, no expression, very cold. Made me uncomfortable and worried. 2. Even though we would do whatever it took... read more

(Original Message sent to client on 2/10/11) Dear Yumi R. My name is Dr. Steve Kasanofsky (Dr. K ) and I am one of the principals at Riverside Animal Hospital First and foremost, my condolences for your loss of your beloved Marley. I know firsthand how our four legged friends become an integral part of our family, and their loss is devastating , even when they are 16 years old. I'd like to address some of your concerns. I am sorry to hear your experience was so bad. I know Marley was suffering from kidney failure a... read more
Please do not take your beloved pets here!!! They are scam artists. I seriously think, after spending way, way, way too much time and money there, that the vets are trained to scam you out as much of money as possible. I don't trust that ANY of the vets there, and I've see them ALL, ever have your pet's best interest at heart. Just awful, awful experiences there repeatedly. Yes, I am to blame for going back, but please learn from my mistakes- don't do it!! For example- I went to take my almost 12 year old do there (I... read more

This "sore knee" was really a dog who presented not being able to bear weight on that rear leg. She was also very painful when manipulating the leg. Yes, we recommended X-rays, which she declined. We tested her for Tick Borne diseases and she turned up with Lyme Disease, which we treated with medication. We recommended blood tests to check if it was safe to give her pain medications (and because older dogs NEED blood tests on a regular basis, and this dog had some other issues as well.). She declined this as well. So y... read more
