It prints ENVEOPES! After many expensive trials and errors finally found a printer that will feed and print envelopes without eating them. Have tested several other models in the past. I use for runs of 500 to 1500 to avoid outsourcing. Many 3rd party toner suppliers available to save some cash too. I own a small commercial print/copy shop.

Poor print quality Once the toner cartridge drops to about 50%, the print quality suffers greatly. So you have to plan on only getting half of the pages per toner cartridge, unless you're just printing drafts and don't care about quality.

Reboot it regularly Beither makes some great printers and I have been fan if them for years - low prices, cheap ink and toner and almost never jams or has print quality issues. My only beef with this bad boy is that often he tells you that something has printed when it actually has not, then you get a message about 10 minutes later that there was an issue with printing (consistently 10 minutes, in fact) Troubleshooting led nowhere, but rebooting it manually seems to take care of it. Not a big deal, just trying to save you fr... read more

Poor quality for photos and graphics We are a small product design agency, and frequently print Photoshop images of product concepts and photos. This printer's print quality is completely unusable - it has strong banding, it prints some colors (blue is one) WAY too dark, is overly contrasty, and can't handle light shading. I attached one print here - it's hard to tell, but the gray color should slowly gradate across that surface, but instead it just abruptly stops, has a strip of greenish yellow (hard to tell from photo), an... read more

Brother REMOVED ABILITY TO RESET Cartridge Toner Count on this Model get the HL-3170CDW instead if you need to be able to reset On my other printer models you could open the cartridge door and press secure+cancel at once to reset the cartridge count. My new printer already has a low black in warking and it turns out THEY REMOVED THIS FUNCTION FROM THIS PRINTER. My other printer HL-3170CDW still has this function! However it prints about 20-30% slower. So if you want to stick with brother, then you may want to get that one in... read more

    Business response:

"Soft" reset toner cartridge function is still there, 1. Open the front cover as if you're going to change the toner cartridge. 2. With the front cover open, press the BACK and CANCEL buttons simultaneously, it can be "hit or miss", you might need to try it a few times. 3. The reset menu appears on the LCD display. 4. Use the menu to select the color and yield you need to reset. 5. The LCD display shows "ACCEPTED" if the reset was successful.

In CASE you might not check WEIGHT of a product before ordering . . I DIDN'T, and it weighed 50+ pounds . . HIGHLY recommended!! It printed TWO fabulous copies, (hence, 2 STARS!!) after having my very knowledgeable computer/printer whiz neighbor help with the unpacking and set up of this printer. He has NEVER had the problems with any printer like he had with this one!! It did print 2 pages . . and DOWNHILL from there!! He did all the necessary stuff to install and hook up, and NEVER was able to print anything after those fi... read more

Doesn't print correctly. Overpriced toner and doesn't produce quality prints. This printer is only useful when printing in black and white. Any prints done in color will have a red ghosting shadow on all the text creating a blurry mess that's hard to read. I've owned this printer for less than two months and even after trying several alignment jobs and contacting Brother I can't get the blurry prints to go away.
