I give this place a 2.. one for the timeliness of my appt and 2 for the colorist who was nice. Other than that his work is sloppy and left me stains all along my hairline and near my ears. I am PISSED! I wear my hair up all the time and now I can't for the next two days until I can shampoo my hair and hopefully wash it out. They gave me wipes, a lady tried to help me scrub the stains out and nothing.. still there. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!! I had to have checked these reviews before going to this place. Since these are "specialists" I went without reviewing. BIG MISTAKE!. Despite having explained what I wanted and also showing a photo, I went in and out exactly the same. When talking with the manager, who did not want to give me her name and has been the rudest manager I have ever met, she told me that she was not going to refund my service because for her the service was well done, that she would try to resolve with support. Roots or solid color there - likely a good idea. Highlights or balayage - come with pictures and triple confirm with the stylist what you are trying to achieve. The stylist was apologetic about being 40mins late, and it's understandable that every business in SF is short staffed right now; would really had appreciated a call though. I got a few barely visible red-toned highlights a few inches in length instead of expected partial balayage. A complete waste of time.

I'm currently at the Hayes Valley location to pick up my coloring. I received three email reminders to come pick up my coloring. When I got here, this is the message posted on the door. I've been on hold for 15 minutes. I wish the business owner had emailed, texted or called me so I wouldn't have biked over. Inconsiderate without an explanation.

I am so sorry to give a 1-star review because some of the people who work here are truly kind people. Everything has gone down the tubes (rapidly and radically) since they lost their first capable manager, Blake, a few months ago. The problem is not the quality of the product - it is that this location is incredibly neglected and mismanaged. Ugh. Terrible experience. No confirmation. No greetings. Horrible phone tree BS. Sterile environment and bad service and color. Nobody greets you when you come in because there's no receptionist. They don't tell you what's going to happen because I guess they assume you've already been here and nobody ever has a first time experience. Oh and there is no receptionist so... They tell you that your appointment is forfeit if you're more than 10 minutes late but it's totally fine for them to be 20 minutes late getting started.... read more

Madison Reed only does single process hair color for root touch-ups. Meaning if your natural hair is dark and your desired color is more than 2-3 shades lighter, they cannot service you here because they do not bleach the first 2-3 inches of growth. This applies to all Madison Reed locations, not just the Hayes Valley one. Seems like a luxury for natural blondes or anyone who wants to cover up their grays (unless they're very stubborn) or stay close to their natural color. I came in for a partial balayage and blow out a while ago since my friend got her hair done here and hers turned out nice. I had made an appt but came on the wrong day and after realizing that, i asked if there was time to get my hair done that day anyway. I purchased the product online, not at this store. Hair falling out in clumps. Dye continues to bleed in shower 5 weeks later. Used once and will never use again. Google and research before using. There was also a class action law suit.
