Pleasanton Vet is a great place that doesn't feel super corporate like so many offices these days. The medicine feels really personal and not just "make a buck and kill the competition" like you get at petsmart or banfield. I've read some of the "negative" reviews here and I think they're not really well founded. Most seem to be about things being "expensive" or seem to come from a lack of understanding about how medicine works. Ive been taking my two dogs here for several years and the service has been amazing every time. E... read more

The staff are very warm and friendly...they seemed to know the names of the pets and their owners as they walked in the door. I would definitely recommend them...I'd give them 5 stars except the $bill :-).

Business response:

We are so glad to hear your first experience with our hospital was a great one, Cynthia. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

Fantastic! is the word I use to describe Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital and Dr. Michael Engelsgjerd (Dr. E) in particular. My performance German Shepherd (AKC Herding Dog) blew his ACL in February. We were hoping it was just a tweak, but when he showed no improvement, I agreed that Dr. E. should operate. He did my female GSD last year, same injury and she came back to full capability. in 3 months. No one can believe she ever had knee surgery. Kilo's surgery was March 23 and as of yesterday, - a week later, he is bearin... read more

Although the Vet's are knowledgeable and the staff is very nice & helpful, 2 stars were deducted due to the very high teeth cleaning cost for our dog. The itemized estimate had a cost for every little thing that added up to be significantly high. We found a vet elsewhere in Pleasanton that did a great job for much less.

We've been going here for many years and normally are very happy. There does seem to be a rotating door with the vets as they seem to stay for a year or two and then move on. Unfortunately my husband's last visit was not as positive. They did not clean our dog's ear properly and did not acknowledge that at all. Will try them one more time but am considering looking for another vet.

Business response:

Thank you for your feedback. Due to your pup's ear infection at the time, it was normal that there would still be yeast and bacteria in the ears a few days later. We apologize if this expectation was not communicated clearly and will work hard to ensure our delivery is more clear for any similar situations in the future!

I had my lab puppy Murphy in recently to Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital and I happened to show Dr. Michael Engelsgjerd photos of what we thought were hives on our female laboratory retriever, Winter, who is under treatment at SAGE in Concord for an immune related gastrointestinal disease. THANK YOU DR. E.!! you definitely saved Winter's life by recognizing that the red blotches on her belly, head and face were not hives but instead were a serious blood vessel event! We immediately returned Winter to SAGE and they recogni... read more

We're so pleased with the ongoing service we get at Pleasanton Veterinary. Our pit bull Pitunia adores the staff (and waiting area cookies). Besides regular shots and check ups, Pitunia has had a little foxtail removal surgery and also surgery for an infected tooth she broke. Each doctor we've seen is fantastic. They're true friends to animals and are pretty darn great with humans too I must say ;) Thank you, guys! Glad to have a place we can trust.

PVH has the most amazing people working for them. They are caring, loving, friendly and knowledgeable. I've been bringing my dogs and small creatures here for many years. They are always well cared for and loved. Barney loves coming to get checked out. Only dog I know that loves the vet. LOL. Thank goodness we've not had to have any serious issues, but when they arise, I feel confident with the staff at PVH to take care of all our pets. Thank you for all you do.

I am so glad we found PVH! Our 10-year old Poodle-Terrier mix suddenly started drinking tons of water, needing to go out every 2-3 hours and had his first accident in the house in probably 9.5 years. We took him to PVH and first did a urinalysis to rule an infection. When the results came back negative, we did blood work and that's when diabetes was confirmed. Dr. Engelsgjerd was absolutely fantastic when I brought my dog in to start on insulin. He patiently and thoroughly answered my huge list of questions and showed me how... read more
