Updating my review from 2013. As i said in my review, i only lived there a year ( by myself and only during the work week). The place was spotless and no marks on the walls. They kept over half of my deposit for repainting and carpet cleaning. Sorry, Domain - by California law, i'm only responsible for anything beyong normal wear and tear. They cant charge for repainting and carpet cleaning for normal wear and tear. I had to sue them in Small Claims court, and I won my money back. Oh they also tried to double charge me for u... read more
Back when this place first opened the prices were decent and accommodations were great. No problems with smokers or noise. Problem is new management has continually raised the price of rent to over $2,500 for a small studio. Like most places in the Bay Area its severely overpriced. Since it was recently built too, they are unshackled by rent laws meaning they will jack up your rent ridiculously if you want to stay. If the prices were more around $1,700 for a studio / bath I would be willing to up my review to 4 stars. Note t... read more
This update is in direct response to Jessica B's scathing review of Michael at the Domain. I have been living here for quite some time, and the entire front office staff from day one, including Michael, have always been friendly, progressional, courteous, and exceptionally helpful. Her review reads more like a personal attack against Michael, than a review of an actual experience at the Domain. Several things about her review just don't make sense, notably Michael is in a sales position, and it would not be in his own intere... read more
Having lived at Domain under both the old and new management, I can attest to what a difference Matthew and his team have made since taking over. Yes, the price is steep, but now it's worth it. Under the old (Alta, I believe?) management, my roommate and I would constantly muse over what the place *could* be. Unfortunately, the old management had awful customer service (rude women at the front desk, people essentially making you feel guilty for asking to retrieve your packages) and didn't seem to care about the property at a... read more
To give the Domain one star is generous on my end (It was the only option). If you are looking to live at a place that is fair and lacks discrimination, then this is not the place for you. From the moment I walked in for information and to take a tour of the property, I knew I was not wanted. I am from out of town and my friend was taking me to prospective sites that she recommended I see for future residency. Upon walking into the lobby, I was taken back by its sleek and modern design. I was excited to see the rest of the p... read more
Short story - Been living here 2 years after moving from Houston, and we love it. The experience is what you make of it. Long Story - Fortunately, we have not had the same experiences as other that have left negative reviews. Maybe it will be different the day we move out, but until then everything has been great. We are generally easy going, patient, and tolerant. We understand the reality of living in an apartment in downtown Oakland. We haven't had many issues requiring maintenance. We don't have a great need for manageme... read more
Domain worked out perfectly for me and I enjoyed my time there. I work in San Francisco and my commute was less than 25 minutes door to door to my office in SOMA on BART. In fact my commute time was less than my coworkers who live in the Marina, North Beach, and Richmond districts. For the price of a San Francisco studio I leased a 2bd/2ba luxury apartment in beautiful downtown Oakland. I frequently walked and biked to Jack London square for the farmers market, movie theater, and leisure time on the bay trail. But even close... read more
I lived at the Domain for one year before I bought a house. I decided to share my pros and cons with others who might consider living at the Domain. Pros: Great centralized location, easy access to Bart, restaurants and bars. You can walk through the federal building straight from Bart to the Domain up until 8:00 p.m. Amenities galore: great fully equipped exercise room, free Wi-Fi lounge area, pool table, yoga sessions and outdoor sitting areas. Nice new apartments with updated fixtures like the gas stove. Very little no... read more
I absolutely LOVEEE it here! I moved into the Domain May of 2012 from TX.I find it to be a relatively quiet community despite being downtown. Staff... property was sold recently.I was nervous about it but I gotta say the new staff has been superb! Super friendly, have added some great additions, they offer free pastries once a week and are always looking for suggestions to improve. Great amenities... serenity studio where weekly yoga classes are free to residents,a huge resident lounge w a full kitchen and tv (I've seen small ... read more
