I read the Yelp reviews of Domain Oakland after submitting application and learned of the criminal activity occurring inside and around the property as well as its hidden service fees, heating, maintenance and management issues. So I withdrew my application within 12 hours of submitting it. Domain Oakland has refused to refund me the $45 application fee. I absolutely love living here BUT - Trash is over $50 a month - that's insane on top of the already expensive rent - Only lived here 5 months and there is an entirely new management team in place - good food drink options but most stuff closes at 5 and on weekends so be prepared to walk/bike Pros - great location to bart and not far to lake Merritt - easy for me to sign lease/etc from out of state - nice building/apartments - Never too loud/noisy - feel safe

What? What jerk neighbors gave this place so few starts? We moved into this place in February of 2013. We had a friendly move-in experience, we got a great two-bedroom on the 4th floor overlooking Preservation park, so we always had an open green view with the bridges in the background. Management got weird right after we moved in. They were no longer friendly. We didn't understand why. Then we found out they were changing property managers. My true star rating is about 4.5. I love my place. My review today is really for the management who is always so accomodating and helpful. I am always amazed at Kelsey who is super responsive and willing to assist everytime I have spoken with her. My apartment itself is super modern and the amenities in the building can't be beat. You DO have to use street smarts and I would adivse staying away from 14th at night whenever possible. I've lived here for four months and within that time, there has been several incidents of grand theft WITHIN the apartment complex. The management here does nothing to notify tenants of such issues, not one email, nor do they take any responsibility for such damages - even with on-site security guards, cameras, and secured entries. The manager, literally said to me "you live in an urban environment and you should expect theft. That's why we require you to have rental insurance." I've been living here for 5 months now and the living experience so far has been very positive. The building is clean, quite, and modern. Easy access to the 12th St. BART station and walking distance to many restaurants (there's a good burrito place just around the corner). You can walk to/from BART through City Center and the federal building (only on weekdays until 11 pm) which has security guards 24/7. The worst living experience I have ever had. We went through two management companies and the last one, FPI, was the worst. We had packages stolen by staff (one was returned after I spoke with the district manager) and had to deal with the CONSTANT rotation of staff. The manager, Kelsey is a nice enough person, but is rarely around and not available when she needs to be. Updating my review from 2013. As i said in my review, i only lived there a year ( by myself and only during the work week). The place was spotless and no marks on the walls. They kept over half of my deposit for repainting and carpet cleaning. Sorry, Domain - by California law, i'm only responsible for anything beyong normal wear and tear. They cant charge for repainting and carpet cleaning for normal wear and tear. I had to sue them in Small Claims court, and I won my money back. Back when this place first opened the prices were decent and accommodations were great. No problems with smokers or noise. Problem is new management has continually raised the price of rent to over $2,500 for a small studio. Like most places in the Bay Area its severely overpriced. Since it was recently built too, they are unshackled by rent laws meaning they will jack up your rent ridiculously if you want to stay.
