Extremely expensive ink, unfriendly software I wish I could buy a low-end printer that just prints. Unfortunately this printer has been nothing but trouble and the ink costs make it a horrible value. First of all, the ink goes incredibly quickly and Brother has made sure that 3rd-party cartridges don't work (like E-Z ink), so you are stuck buying their ink, which of course is very expensive. Extremely disappointed! This printer started out great, but after only maybe a dozen uses, within the first few months after purchasing, it quit on me. It keeps prompting me to clean the pick up rollers, which I did in addition to everything else suggested by the information I could find online, but to no avail. Cleaning Print Heads a Constant Requirement Got this printer to support a wonderful Canon that had outlived its company support and drivers. Review said this Brother J895DW is a great printer. Not so much! We have had to use the internal option to clean the print heads numerous times - once a week or so if we don't use the printer often. When we do that, it works OK but it takes time and wastes paper and ink to have to keep messing with the print heads. Have had for less than 3 months and it already wont work. Print 5a error will not go away no matter what I do. I've tried everything trouble shooting suggestions aside from sending it in for repairs which is the last resort.

Just OK for b&w docs. Everything else is poor quality Color accuracy is way off. Blues print purple, and overall quality of printing is poor. First one I received was defective, so I got a replacement and am displeased with the performance of the product
Dont waste the money Printer is not easy to connect to anything!! Will not work for older laptops and computers and has a very hard time detecting a phone! I cannot use it. I bought 4 months ago to have for tax season and it has not worked with my laptop to print my stuff. So disappointed!
Scanning is deficient Even at highest DPI settings, scan quality is poor. Consumer Reports confirms scan quality not among the best, but actual use proves the scanner is borderline useless for my art student daughter. Otherwise, setup and printing went fine.
Can only use Brother cartridges I bought this because I liked that brother didn't care what ink you bought. Well in the past this was true. Not now. If you use something other than a brother cartridge, you get an error message stating it doesn't recognize the cartridge and can not read the ink level. Dangerous because if you use a printer and the ink runs out, you WILL burn up the print head and there is no repair. So if you don't mind exclusively using Brother cartridges, its fine.
