We have been anxious to experience the newly renovated Commodore. It did not disappoint, the interior of the bar and restaurant are like a trip back to the 1920s and very elegant. The cocktails have fun names like the "Zelda" and the "Fitzgerald". For dinner, I had the Pacific Sole which was delicious. One person in our party had the ribeye and was pleased with the quality and preparation. Two in our party had the risotto which they found somewhat disappointing. It seemed to have too much liquid and was somewhat soupy. I wou... read more
I cannot say enough about this unique restaurant. Do read up on the history, it's fascinating and an authentic restoration to boot. Do also note the "dress code". While it's not to fancy, I was sad to see a few country-looking folks show up in sloppy jeans. Everything we ordered was great, I enjoyed the grains entree, very flavorful and original. The strip came dry (that's why you shouldn't order meat past medium) but also very fatty & grisly. The Zelda cocktail was delish and refreshing. This place is absolutely gorgeous an... read more
Make sure you are comfortable walking several blocks in the dark on icy walkways.... There is no parking. There is lot but it is always full. Don't ask for a blender drink, there is non electrical outlets at the bar. You will be offered a substitute desert. Limited menu, better options at w.a.frost, but not as historic. Don't miss seeing the renovation, but remember the wait staff is all to young to remember what the old commodore looked like.
very reasonably priced - appreciate the great amount of nonalcoholic beverages, plus a great bar. Food was delicious and service was great.
This is a very unique dining experience. The Deco style is worth the visit alone. Our service was great as were our entrées. So happy that The Commodore is back in St. Paul!
Like other eating establishments this owner has, this one has average food that is very expensive. Service is below average and they are under staffed. Great place for a drink but not to have a meal.
Parking is a bit confusing - they have a big lot, however if you pull into the driveway right by the building it just goes to the underground parking (for residents?) - not the restaurant parking. There is another entrance to the street-level lot for the restaurant just a bit further down. Very elegant place to have a few drinks and/or dinner. Lots of old photos around to look at, too. Interesting history. Cocktails were very good - well crafted. We liked both the Commodore and the Side Car. The Side Car wasn't too sweet, ei... read more
Lovely, spacious, romantic place, but not stuffy. Very attentive, knowledgable, and friendly staff. Excellent appetizers (we tried the lobster deviled eggs, croquettes, and risotto), entrees (pork scallopini, sole, salmon, chicken), desserts (creme brulee, chocolate souffle), and of course, cocktails (Blood and Sand, Zelda, Commodore, and Ma Barker's Nightcap). The best dinner out we've had in years, even topping the Spoon and Stable.
From the moment you walk in the renovated art deco design building, you know it will be a great night. Right from the beginning, we had excellent service with great suggestions on food, wine and specialty drinks, try the Zelda! Our top picks for entrees were the Pork Scaloppini and Pacific Sole dishes. Salads offered are both hot and cold. We tried the Waldorf Salad(cold) and the Cauliflower Gratin(hot), both were flavorful and special. Unfortunately; we were too full for dessert, next time. After dinner, we walked through t... read more
