If you're ever looking for an excellent alternative to the Alamo Drafthouse experience, look no further than the Violet Crown. Spectacular food and shockingly good cocktails. Try the Chicago Wagyu Beef Dog with the Sissy Lynn or, my favorite, the Deadly Poppy Field. Make sure you check the official Violet Crown Website to check movie listings. (Flixster usually posts the wrong showtimes.)

I love this place. The movies are Indie/high-end/atypical stuff and they are always good. They have REALLY good drinks for a movie theater. Hell, for a bar. Comfortable seats. The place is aesthetically pleasing. Just all and all a great place. Get your parking ticket validated for free parking in the parking garage!

This place is called the Violet Crown because it is undisputedly the royal highness of the art cinema industry. I really can't rave enough about how much I love the tastefully designed interior of the theater, or the fact that there is both a snack bar and a cafe to choose from depending on which you're more feeling. I LOOOOOOOVE MOVIES and i love violet crown! you def have to buy tickets in advance but any seat is a good seat - even the very front row (b/c you can recline). they offer refillable sodas and popcorn (yeah!) and their hummus was pretty good. i have yet to try any other there other menu items. the last film i saw there had a glitch and when i complained about it, the manager gave me free passes. great customer service! parking is comp'd if you park in the garage.

This is my favorite cinema in Austin. There is lots of covered parking, and the 4 hours that's allowed gives you enough time to grab a snack before the film at the bar, take a glass inside, or stop nearby for a drink afterwards. The movies are top rated, seats are comfy, reserved in advance, and all in all it's a pretty close to perfect experience.

My husband and I love this place. Always great films coming through. The seats are a huge deal, they are great, super comfortable and a bit oversized which I love. The food and bar is great here too. Anything from Topo to pizza. Such a great spot

Have to give big thumbs up to the GM at Violet. He read my review and responded immediately. We were not looking for anything free but he offered some comp tickets to a show. Classy. Asked when, where, why with our negative experience and sounded like he was going to find out what's what. Good for him. I'd hire him personally......

Love this place! Sure, there's the drafthouses all around, but I like the Violet Crown because I never feel pressured to eat if I'm not hungry. You order outside and bring the food in, so people aren't walking in front of you and paying for the bill the entire show. The seats are kooshy and comfy and the theaters are small and intimate. The best part is that they are willing to play the Indie films that the drafthouses don't always carry. It's a great time for Oscar watching. So I've lived in Austin for 5 years and never visited Violet Crown. I've driven by it but never had a reason to go seeing as how I live in north Austin. A last minute decision to see a movie with friends on a Monday night landed me at VC. I didn't know what to expect.
