Classy yet unpretentious. I like going to the movies if there is one I want to see, but this place makes me love going to the movies. The seats are comfortable, they are selective about the films they show, and the food and drinks are reasonably priced (as far as movie theatre food goes) and pretty good. Love the overall vibe. If you can, buy the tickets online as the theatres are small and they remain busy even on weekdays and movies that have been out for weeks.

The food is not very good. I recommend going to dinner first and then seeing a movie here. Drinks are good, screen size is fine, but the seating is a bit awkward. The location is convenient and it's nice to have an alternative to the Alamo Drafthouse. Also, they validate parking - so don't forget your ticket in the car.

This is a super cute theatre, great date spot, and overall enjoyable experience. Parking is free with validation from buying a ticket (which is definitely nice when you consider that most restaurants make you pay for valet parking or force you to find your own spot. Downtown. On a Saturday night. Really?) Anyway, you walk up and order food/drinks at the register if you want anything (I had a forgetable, overpriced salad but the flatbreads and truffle fries are great), they give you a ticket, and then your food is served to y... read more

I've only been there twice, and I love it. The seats in the front row are extremely comfy, with foot rests. The food is good, and the theater is a nice size. Maybe it's a tad to expensive to go to regularly, but it makes a great place for a special outing. I definitely recommend the Violet Crown for anyone looking for a new cinema.

My favorite place to see a movie. I always book the front row those chairs are so comfy. Just be aware if you book a handicapped seat in the front row you could be asked to move if they need it. The free parking here is the big perk for me. I can leave my house 15 minutes before the movie starts knowing I have an assigned seat and a place to park. I usually never eat here the food is way to expensive and not really that good, although the brussell sprouts are quite tasty. I do find it quite irritating that you have to bus yo... read more

This is a place that used to intimidate me. What I used to think - People here gotta be cool (hipsters, film know it alls) - People gotta be $ to pay for parking somewhere too What I thought afterwards: This place is amazing! Parking validation for 4 hours. So after watching a movie, my fiancee and I decided to walk around downtown and pump the Austin downtown economy with our wallets =) There is a nice bar and lounge if you arrive early - or want to stay late. Every seat is also a great seat. A friend tipped us t... read more

Whereas Alamo Drafthouse can be best described as "Dinner and a Movie," Violet Crown is designed to be a one-stop shop for "Dinner and THEN a movie." When buying tickets ($13 each/$9 matinee), there's a casual note at the bottom of the ticket stub advising the buyer to arrive an hour early to "enjoy the menu and some cocktails." My girlfriend and I arrived about 15 minutes before our movie (our bad), and were worried about not being able to get any food. But we zeroed in pretty quickly and the service was quick. We were tol... read more

In how many cities can you go to a movie, have a cocktail, and eat a quasi-gourmet meal at the same time? We Austinites are truly spoiled by the Violet Crown, Alamo, and iPix. Violet Crown is a bit more pretentious and exclusive than Alamo Drafthouse. Whereas Alamo has mainstream movies and themed events to old favorites, Violet Crown often is the first in town to debut features from SXSW. The food is fairly comparable- pizzas, appetizers, beer, and cocktails. I've had pizza both places and didn't find one more impressive th... read more

I wouldn't mind going again. I think the things I learned from my first experience will help me have an easier time of it next time. My mom and I went for lunch and a movie on a weekday afternoon. Little did we know exactly how little the tables would be. Let's just say if you plan on getting a meal with an appetizer to share you better be really good at juggling. Basically, we ordered the hummus and pita to share as well as the pepperoni pizza for me and the margherita pizza for my mom. We also had a iced tea and a bottle ... read more
