Whereas Alamo Drafthouse can be best described as "Dinner and a Movie," Violet Crown is designed to be a one-stop shop for "Dinner and THEN a movie." When buying tickets ($13 each/$9 matinee), there's a casual note at the bottom of the ticket stub advising the buyer to arrive an hour early to "enjoy the menu and some cocktails." My girlfriend and I arrived about 15 minutes before our movie (our bad), and were worried about not being able to get any food. But we zeroed in pretty quickly and the service was quick. We were tol... read more

In how many cities can you go to a movie, have a cocktail, and eat a quasi-gourmet meal at the same time? We Austinites are truly spoiled by the Violet Crown, Alamo, and iPix. Violet Crown is a bit more pretentious and exclusive than Alamo Drafthouse. Whereas Alamo has mainstream movies and themed events to old favorites, Violet Crown often is the first in town to debut features from SXSW. The food is fairly comparable- pizzas, appetizers, beer, and cocktails. I've had pizza both places and didn't find one more impressive th... read more

I wouldn't mind going again. I think the things I learned from my first experience will help me have an easier time of it next time. My mom and I went for lunch and a movie on a weekday afternoon. Little did we know exactly how little the tables would be. Let's just say if you plan on getting a meal with an appetizer to share you better be really good at juggling. Basically, we ordered the hummus and pita to share as well as the pepperoni pizza for me and the margherita pizza for my mom. We also had a iced tea and a bottle ... read more

Nice, comfortable stadium seating paired with the small, intimate venue setting is a great escape from the normal cinemas. We visited the Violet Crown for the first time over the weekend to see A Most Wanted Man (side bar; it's a must see as it was suspense filled. Philip Seymour Hoffman at his best. So sad that it was his last work). I'm certain the Violet Crown will become one of our regular hang outs. Full bar and plenty of choices regarding food. To make matters even better the popcorn is bottomless and parking is fr... read more

I had never heard of this little jewel of a theater until my son Anthony told me about it. Conveniently located downtown and next to a parking garage, I was more than happy with the courteous and attentive staff as well as what they have to offer. A dining area beside the bar, which from what I hear, makes great drinks. I seldom drink but I plan to return with a date and enjoy a bottle of wine. They also have a nice menu for food and a concessions area for some tasty treats, try the shake please. The waiter was very polit... read more

This is a great movie venue. Incredibly comfortable - way better than the chair in my living room. Each theater is pretty small, but it's because they give you plenty of space in La-Z-Boy type comfort. If it were an airline, it would be first class (on a domestic flight). Nice bar. Great service.

Best place to catch indie films in Austin! Definitely not iPic, but nicest theatre downtown! Get there early for appetizers and drinks before you head in the theatre or you can take them in. There's not as much space to relax, eat and watch the movie as other dine in theaters but the location can't be beat!

Great central location (2nd and Guadalupe) for an indie theater with small, cozy screening rooms, comfy chairs (with fold-out tables), and food and booze options. We tried the Mediterranean plate, which at $10 is a little steep (although concessions is how these places make a buck, in fairness) but really quite good. Unlike the Alamo, there's no wait staff (that's not a bad thing, though). Very few trailers, no-hassle lines, very clean, new, and nice, all for about $2 more than you'd pay at a conventional Regal 8. If an in... read more
