Our friend went in for an eye exam. She doesn't speak English well and is on Medicaid-subsidized insurance. They charged her a co-pay with her insurance company. But they refused to provide her the results of the exam without an additional $75. I spoke to them and their story made no sense whatsoever. They would immediately provide the results by email for $75 but -- due to HIPPA -- would require 3 weeks and a pile of paperwork to provide everything but the actual prescription. They called the $75 a "refraction fe... read more
Business response:
Peter, we’re sorry to hear about your friend’s experience. Our office follows standard industry practices, including a separate fee for refraction, which is not covered by most Medicaid plans. This information is provided to all patients prior to the exam. We also comply with all applicable regulations regarding patient records. Your feedback helps us improve. Thank you.
Would not recommend going here. Costly exam for a very minor problem. I had a small particle in my eye and just needed an office visit. All the optometrist had to do was flip my eyelid inside out to remove the particle with a Q-tip. I insisted that I did not need any photography or additional scans. They said I had to do them to see the doctor, but that everything would be included in the exam cost and that I would not be billed extra. This was not the case. They billed an extra $725 for the exam. I'm paying $300+ for tests ... read more

Anna, we’re sorry to hear about your experience and the confusion around billing. Our goal is always to provide thorough care, but we understand your concerns. Your feedback helps us improve. Thank you.
My experience was pretty standard. The staff were alright, nothing special, but they got the job done. The doctor seemed knowledgeable enough, though a bit rushed. Overall, an okay visit, but I wasn't blown away, you know? Just average, I guess."
An exceptionally thorough examination. Kudos to Dr. Gard who explained everything thoroughly and who has an excellent rapport with her patients. Look forward to seeing her again at our next examination. Linda and Stephen Wilhelm

Stephen, thank you for your wonderful review!
Read the small print my friends !!! The staff, technician and doctor I saw were all nice, Chelsea Eye Ophthalmology's prescription release policy on the other had, is not so nice. On top of paying for your office visit, you also have to pay an ADDITIONAL $75.00 just to get a copy of your prescription (if you ever plan on getting new lenses.) You get an eye exam and you don't get a prescription. LOL, it's a bit mind boggling. Won't be going back.
Good enough eye doctors, VERY expensive considering they take my insurance. Here's the part I cannot tolerate: $75 to get a copy of my prescription for eyewear. UNACCEPTABLE! Considering the amount charged for the visit. It cost them nothing to email it to me. Might be time to look for a new doctor.
As a healthcare professional, I can only say how sorry I feel for patients going here because they might not think to question the bill that they receive. They were running behind on the day of my visit, which I can understand and forgive as this happens in many clinics. My actual visit was totally fine, and my provider was kind. From this interaction, I hoped to return on an annual basis for my yearly eye exams, but what happened afterwards is really what soured my "vision" of this place given their questionable billing pra... read more

Good luck getting your medical records released to your PCP! After many delays and jumping through hoops, a B!TCH clerical insisted this normal procedure would not proceed without payment of a fee. If you like being treated like a number, non-entity, this is the place for you!
Business response:
John C. It’s always best to contact the office directly with any concerns. The office does follow New York State guidelines but waives the fee for any financial hardship. https://www.health.ny.gov/publications Q. If I want copies of my records, do I have to pay for them? The law allows physicians and institutions to charge no more than 75 cents a page, plus postage, for paper copies of medical records.
This is my first ever YELP review, and only because I found the level of care/treatment here so disturbing. The doctors and staff here botched my prescription, and following receipt of my new contact lenses (quickly realizing that something was wrong, as I've worn contacts for 20 years) I called the office. I left messages, and didn't hear back for a week. The staff passed me off from secretary, to technician, to someone else...and i had to explain each time that the prescription had been sent wrong (they mis-typed th... read more
