I was so excited when the first location in Flatiron opened and was a client of Camilo's from day one. When he moved to the Upper East Side location, I followed him there. He's the only reason I voluntarily go north of 23rd Street these days! The salon is clean, low-key and the price is right, especially for someone like me whose hair grows like a weed.

I visited The new Madison Reed Color Bar on The Upper East Side Tuesday morning and had a great experience. The salon is sleek with white marble counters and great lighting. Ricky who colored my hair and applied a gloss was professional, knowledge and charming. Best of all she did an amazing job! I have lots of grey roots and she covered them seamlessly and the color is to (dye) for. Iram who washed my hair was very friendly and gave me a great scalp massage! I came in for roots, gloss and blowout. The space was spacious and clean. Service was attentive and my stylist was a great conversationalist who also gave a great head massage while washing my hair. However, they were not able to match my roots with the color of my hair. My hair was a lighter shade of brown, but my hair is naturally black. When the session was over, my roots were dark brown/black. It wasn't noticeable that I had done anything to my roots. Madison Reed is the salon for those of us who love to dye our hair/have our hair dyed but do not need all the frills of a full salon. They do not cut hair here, they do not do highlights (as far as I know, anyway), all they do is color - and it's great! I was here on a Yelp promo and loved every second of my session. I modeled for a color session at Madison Reed and was quite happy with it. The colorists were very tentative and thorough to pick and apply the right shade. Also got a blowdry afterwards which was pretty awesome too.

The hair color service was great. But, this salon lacks ethics and integrity. I was placed in a chair up front with a surveillance camera pointed directly at me; no one informed me or asked my permission, but that camera was on. I photographed the camera for my records. This type of behavior by a company makes you question their integrity - I am pausing my membership as I don't want to give business or $ to a company that participates in illegal surveillance. Too expensive for the service provided. $127 for a single process treatment, and I have to "self serve" my cleaning up with cotton balls in the salon.

First and foremost my colorist was pretty obnoxious, made the experience uncomfortable. And secondly, I would have appreciated if it was advised that the color I chose was not going to take. The way I came in is the way I came out. Not happy. Don't plan to return.

Zero stars. HORRIBLE. I wanted all over color to replace the dark brown/nearly black color I had gotten from a home kit. Tatiana insisted she would use the same color that was too dark for my roots and ends. I wanted a different color. She could not understand that. Ultimately she told me to leave 89th St/3rd Ave and go down to 67th St/3rd Ave Madison Reed.
