built to break It seemed like a great deal. I liked the compact design, and all that ink was great, but... Like many others here, worked fine for a year and a half then a paper jam happened. We cleared it by following the on-screen instructions. Every printing after, the page would print but not eject, leading to a jam. Very quickly, the ink absorber pad filled - needing replacement by the authorized servicer. A $300 printer should not break so easily. All of the components are very flimsy. It was built to break. Cheap Can never seem to “locate” printer. Been a pain since purchased. Would not buy again
Absolutely terrible software--hardtime setting it up It shouldn't be hard to setup the wifi to a printer, but this Brother is terrible. After about six hours and two techie friends working on it, I finally gave up. It was easy to set the printer to print from the computer but I was never able to get the printer to scan from the printer to the computer. We tried everything, even dealing with the firewalls. Impossible to connect to a home network via router using wireless or wire I am throwing away my MFC-J985DW today after owning at least a year. I am just very tired of having to reset all the network devices every few days whether I am using wireless to connect to the router or a wired connection. Defective Printer Very disappointed in this printer. I've gotten 3 different printers and each one that I've gotten is worse. The first printer jammed and could not do 2-sided copies. The second printer has a streak in the color ink. The third printer has two streaks.
there's a good chance it won't pick up the signal Totally unreliable. Frequent networking issues, whether you connect via ethernet directly to your router, or place it 10 inches away from your wifi access point, there's a good chance it won't pick up the signal, if you're using modern bands/protocols. The NIC in this device is garbage, thus to save a few cents, Brother has managed to render the rest of this device a very large paper weight. Printer is Garbage I've only been able to print about 10 pages since I've had this printer. Nothing but paper jams every time I try to print anything.
Why isn't there a Darwinism award for bad tech? This piece of garbage would take GOLD. What a complete waste of my money. This printer is BRAND NEW and the literal FIRST piece of paper i tried to print, it told me there was a paper jam. I followed the prompts and it seemed to work. For about a day.
