Loved the food, loved the service. (Our server was fantastic.) Sadly, however, we were seated in a small room off the front of the restaurant, jammed between two large tables which each had three or more screaming children. (A third table in this room also had three or more children.) Paying upwards of $120 for dinner is fine, but having to listen to children shriek (after 6 pm) at the same time is a little offensive.
The restaurant was overbooked and understaffed. There was a long line just waiting to be checked in. We had theater tickets for 8pm show, so had made a 6:15 reservation--probably like everyone else. We took tight corner counter seats in the bar rather than wait for a restaurant table. But the maitre d' thanked us by buying a round of drinks. Lousy table, fairly good food, but lovely glass of wine!
Our table wasn't in the main part of the dining room and so we felt a bit excluded from everything. The food is ok but nothing to write home about and fairly expensive for what it is. Service was ok and friendlt but felt that we had to ask for a lot of things eg having candle lit. Probably would not come back again as we were not overly impressed with the food that we had but the cocktails were good.
Excellent service and cocktails. Very nice ambiance with a theme. We had the paella and ribeye steak which were mediocre and did not make our experience worth the $200 tab (with desserts and gratuity).
My first visit was very positive, good food, great service, positive vibe. My return visit last week was terrible. Waiter was out to lunch, not interested in serving us. I asked him for several things, he failed to deliver most of them. He was not rude, just not engaged, he did not care if we ate or starved, enjoyed our meal or not. Food was OK this time, the best part was the main dish meatloaf. I will not return, there are too many other options in the immediate area.
This was my first time back at Red Eye Grill in a couple of years, and I'm sad to say that very little lived up to my memories. The clam chowder was chewy and the service was nothing special. Hopefully this was just an off nite... but I am now hesitant to recommend this as a safe bet for visitors new to New York.
I was disappointed. The waiters tried hard, but my entree (special of the day) wasn't very interesting and the dessert sorbet was ordinary. I thought the food was overpriced for what it was and probably won't return.
Incompetent guest reception. Confused staff. Food over priced and just OK.
Perhaps it was because I went there during Restaurant Week, but the food was nothing special. Some restaurants tend to do this when you order the prix fixe menu. I have heard wonderful things about this place, but didn't think the food was out of this world.
