I was here a year ago for 90 days and I was impressed with the place, that's why I came back. Therapists Ian and Christine H gave me insight on how to not relapse and avoid relapse situations as well as different tools and things to help strengthen me. I'm familiar with all the staff and they are very cordial and respectful toward me. A lot of people complained about the nursing, but I found that they were very helpful. The facility is fantastic. Therapist Brian always made an effort to follow up with me and shared his class materials with me. My Therapist Ian was very knowledgeable. I felt comfortable participating in groups. I used this time for myself. I did a lot of walking and a little bit of working out. Its nice that they allow you to keep your phone. If you listen in the group therapy and in your individual sessions, they give you the tools you need to work with. Its just as matter of applying it. I am writing this letter at the end of a 6.5 month journey. The last leg of this was here at River Oaks. I was placed by the VA in a homeless shelter by error after 3 months of sobriety in 2 other treatment centers. Jeff spoke with me and was empathic to my situation just by judging the desperation in my voice and got me out of that unsafe environment. I came here for detox, and I was here 10 days. I've been through a lot of detox facilities before, and this place gave me a safe place to come and detox safely.
I have been to River Oaks before and the reason I came back is because I know this program works. Even though its not a 12 step based program, they expose us to the 12 steps as well as SMART and Dharma recovery. They give so many options. Before Covid we were taken to outside meetings and given lots of opportunities to stay sober on the outside. Nurse Shay, she does everything through love. TA's Tanya, Keita, Cecil, Darren overnight, Natasha overnight were all great. My therapist Ali, Therapist Trina always made me laugh and has been very welcoming to me even though she wasn't my therapist. Were trying to work it out so I can continue seeing Ali privately after I leave. I love the groups, Demitrius in general has a great personality that keeps you engaged. Nurse Frank was helpful. My therapist Cami was excellent. I liked Tony and Demetrius for groups, they were my two favorites. I learned a lot here. I learned about my emotions like how to handle my anger. Dr. Murphy was also excellent.
I attended all my groups while I was here. I came to treatment after having 5 years clean and sober and I'm so glad that I did. The admissions process was so fast I spoke with a woman over the phone who connected with Dr. Rahman who assessed me over the phone and I was on a plane the next morning which was amazing because my disease was out to get.
