Let’s be honest, 2020 has not turned out exactly the way anyone expected. However, with more and more people spending time inside, customers are turning to plumbers in order to fix the leaky pipes they’ve ignored for so long. Whether you’re just starting your plumbing business or you’ve been running one for years, here are some tips to help you win more customers and turn the trend of 2020 around.

Claim and optimize your Google My Business profile

Whether a customer has heard of you from social media, Facebook, or from a friend, chances are that they’ll search for your business on Google. You not only need to be visible on Google but also look better than your competitors. That’s why it’s so important to claim and optimize your Google My Business profile. It looks something like this:

Most existing businesses already have a Google My Business profile, all you have to do is claim it and verify that you’re actually the owner. Google verifies your business by sending you a postcard with a code that you need to add to your profile. This process usually takes 2-3 weeks but is well worth it.

Once you’ve claimed your Google My Business profile, be sure to optimize it for the best results. Include information that your customers need to contact you including phone number, hours of operation, and email address.

Get a profile on relevant sites

Having an online presence is key for getting discovered. Here are some of the go-to sites customers look at to find a plumber Claiming or creating your profile on these sites will help build your online presence.

  • Angie’s List
  • Thumbtack
  • Yelp
  • Facebook
  • Houzz

Get the Google Guarantee badge

Local businesses can also get Google Guarantee badge by signing up for Local Services ads on Google. Google Guaranteed businesses have a green color badge with a white checkmark in it. Being Google guaranteed is attractive to customers because it means the companies have been pre-screened by Google and insured. Also, once you have the Google Guaranteed badge your business will show up at the top of Google search results. This ensures visibility to anyone who searches for a plumbing company in your area.

Get a chat widget on your website

If a customer is able to find your business on Google, it’s a great first step. But the journey doesn’t end there. They still need to be able to get in touch with you.  If a customer calls you and they end up being on hold, they might get frustrated and go to a competitor instead.  That’s why it’s important to offer easy communication options.

We recommend that plumbing businesses have a website chat widget on their site. That’s a little chat bubble where a customer can communicate with you and ask questions (it’s what you see on the bottom right corner). With a website widget, a potential customer can reach you while they are on your website and ask their question, request a quote, etc. By responding to them immediately, you increase the chances of them becoming your customer.

Of course, there are going to be times when nobody on your team is available. In these cases, make sure that your chat software allows you to respond to customer questions via text message. That way, you can get in contact with your customers as soon as you’re available.

Collect and display testimonials

There are tons of horror stories that circulate about untrustworthy plumbers that do terrible jobs and only mess things up further. That means that all plumbing businesses, no matter how great their services, are dealing with a negative stigma right off the bat.

There’s a way around this stigma: collect reviews. More reviews show social proof, proving that you are providing world-class service. You also have a better chance of ranking high in relevant search results.

To collect more reviews, simply send your customers a text or an email that links to your profile on a review site like Google and Facebook. Most customers understand the benefits that reviews can provide for small business and will be happy to do so.

Once you have customer reviews, be sure to display them clearly on your website. Having testimonials front and center will help prospective customers make the decision and move forward with your services.

Engage your customers on text message

Every homeowner needs a plumber at some or another. Most of them will need a plumber multiple times in their lives. That’s why it’s important to make sure that it’s easy to reach out to your business. Your existing customers will be able to reach out whenever they have a problem.

Let your customers know that whenever they need you, they can send you a text. Right now, more and more customers are turning to text messages because it’s significantly more convenient than a phone call. We recommend getting a software that allows you to text from your landline so that your customers will be more likely to recognize you.
